Dear Sirs,
We were shocked and disappointed to read a report in the Financial Times Deutschland newspaper that the European Union is to be represented at today’s inauguration ceremony of Mahmood Ahmadinejad in Teheran.
We hope that this report is mistaken. The European Union is well aware that the officially proclaimed result of this election was utterly fraudulent, that the so-called ‘winner’ has no popular legitimacy whatsoever and that he represents nothing more than a totalitarian faction within a regime which is itself discredited.
The European Union is also aware of the horrifying repression which this regime [faction] has inflicted on the Iranian people over the last two months : 4,000 people arrested since 12 June 2009, over one hundred assassinated, over one hundred disappeared, Stalinist show trials aimed at humiliating the accused and intimidating the wider public.
We can understand that the European Union does not want to be seen to ‘interfere’ in the internal political choices of another country. However, by choosing to attend this ceremony, you will be interfering. You will be saying publicly to the people of Iran “we do not care about your democratic rights, we do not care about the murder of your loved ones, and we do not care about those being tortured in the jails and secret dungeons of the Islamic Republic. We are here to extend the same diplomatic courtesy to this President as to any other”.
Surely this is not what the European Union stands for? Surely the European Union does not believe that its interests in Iran and in the wider Middle East are served by attaching itself to this miserable regime? Surely the decision-makers of the European Union understand that the people of Iran are watching, and are judging what you do?
The European Union should not forget that 75% of all Iranians are under 30 years of age, and they are utterly sick of the regime and its lies. What will prevail will be the Iran of these brave young people, not the Iran of Mahmood Ahmadinejad. And they will remember who stood with them, and who did not.
We call on you to instruct your Ambassadors in Teheran to stay away from today’s masquerade.
We call on you to demand that the repression in Iran be stopped, that all political prisoners be released and that those responsible for human rights violations be punished.
We call on you to threaten the adoption of targeted sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations in Iran, to announce that EU companies will no longer be authorised to export to Iran any technology which allows the regime in Teheran to spy on its own people, and to push your Member States in the UN Security Council UN to ensure that others do the same.
The movement of hope, of change, ‘Where is My Vote?’ has shown that it can survive despite the repression of the regime. It deserves your solidarity and your support, not your contempt.
Yours sincerely,
Ali Samad
