Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
As a delegation of the European Parliament will visit Tehran in February 2018, we
hereby remind you of the following circumstances regarding the situation of human
rights in Iran:
– Violations of human rights in Iran continue. Following the mass protests in December
2017 and January 2018 against poverty, unemployment, government corruption, state
repression and dictatorship, 25 protesters were killed in the streets by security forces.
Thousands of participants in the demonstrations were arrested. Several prisoners
were killed in custody. Hundreds of those arrested are still in prison. They may be
subject to severe punishment. Their lives are at risk.
– Iranian women protesting against mandatory wearing of the hijab have been arrested.
Court officials have threatened to punish them.
– Mr. Ramin Hosseinpanahi, a dissident arrested in the Kurdish region of Iran, has
been sentenced to death.
– Professor Ahmadreza Djalali, a medical doctor and university lecturer working in
weden, Belgium and Italy, has been sentenced to death for “espionage, corruption on earth”.
– Three leaders of the protests against the outcome of the 2009 Presidential
elections, namely Zahra Rahnavard, Mirhossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karoubi, are
under house arrest since 201
– Several Iranians of dual nationality have been arrested and charged with espionage.
– Hundreds of journalists, labour representatives, human rights activists, students and
other citizens are in prison, some of them suffering from physical and psychological
torture.
Political prisoners in Iran are either deprived of any court procedure or have
been sentenced by courts that denied them any access to legal representation.
We urge you to demand that the Iranian authorities respect their obligations with
regard to human rights.
– We ask that you demand the release of the citizens arrested during the recent
protests and access by all prisoners to legal representation by lawyers of their choice.
– We propose that you request to visit in prison Mr. Hosseinpanahi and Professor Djalali(under death sentence), as well as the women arrested following the hijab protest.
– We ask that you press the Iranian authorities to grant access to the country by the various UN Human Rights Special Rapporteurs, in particular the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, Mrs.Asma Jehangir.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Hassan Zehtab
